EIT Health UK-Ireland 2018 DPhil/PhD Transition Fellowships Awards Announced

19th August 2018

The University of Oxford awarded four PhD/DPhil Transition Fellowships

We are very happy to announce the results of the EIT Health DPhil/PhD Transition Fellowships 2018, which have been awarded to four new and inspiring DPhil students, specialising in areas such as improving stem cells research, type 2 diabetes, autism, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

EIT Health partners, Imperial College London and the University of Oxford, originally piloted this scheme in 2016 with the aim of addressing the funding gap between completion of the doctoral thesis and obtaining further seed funding for innovative ideas, products and services based on the doctoral research.

This year, the programme involved seven universities across Europe who provided suitable candidates and formed the panels to assess the projects and ultimately decide on the winners.

The University of Oxford awarded the four most innovative proposals with Gold and Silver prizes and the respective DPhil/PhD candidates’ host departments are now being provided with a pre-seed (spark) award to fund accelerated development of discovery research in the applicants first post-doctoral year.

In addition, successful candidates are now being supported to obtain transferable skills as well as being supported by the technology and intellectual property offices of the university for the duration of their fellowship.

The winners of 2018 are:

  • Mehroz Ehsan (Gold Prize)
  • Ben Dodsworth (Sliver Prize)
  • Thomas Rouyard (Sliver Prize)
  • Alex Fraser (Sliver Prize)

The universities involved in 2018 are: University of Oxford, University of Coimbra, Sorbonne University, University of Cologne, Université Grenoble Alpes, Leiden University and Karolinska Institutet.
